New York Giants star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul reportedly suffered a “severe” hand injury while attempting to light fireworks at or near his home in South Florida.

According to NFL.com, the fireworks were apparently transported in a rented U-Haul van. Pierre-Paul posted an Instagram video in front of the van prior to Saturday’s incident.
The injury could complicate his future with the Giants.
Pierre-Paul is coming off a bounce-back 2014 campaign where he started all 16 games for the first time in his career and graded out as the league’s seventh-best 4-3 defensive end out of 59 qualifiers at Pro Football Focus.
The Giants used the franchise tag on JPP in March, but the Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowler has yet to sign the $14.8 million tender and therefore is not currently under contract.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops, but early indications are that it’s not a career-threatening injury.
