Yet another star player for the San Francisco 49ers has made a shocking early retirement announcement.
49ers star offensive tackle Anthony Davis released the following statement, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
After years of thought, I’ve decided it will be best for me to take a year or so away from the NFL. This will be a time for me to allow my Brain and Body a chance to heal. I know many won’t understand my decision, that’s ok.
I hope you too have the courage to live your life how you planned it when day dreaming to yourself growing up. Your Life is Your dream and you have the power to control that dream. I’m simply doing what’s best for my body as well as my mental health at this time in my life.
Sincerely,
Anthony Davis
Davis is the fourth star 49ers player to retire this offseason, joining defensive lineman Justin Smith and linebackers Chris Borland and Patrick Willis. The 25-year-old offensive tackle was in the middle of a five-year, $33.2 million contract extension he signed with the Niners back in 2013.
He’s since proclaimed that he’ll return the field “in a year or so” and is taking the time “to heal and recoup.”
If there’s a silver lining for the 49ers, it’s that they own his contractual rights if he comes out of retirement.
Davis has appeared in 71 games (all starts) in five seasons with the 49ers (2010-14) since entering the league as a first round pick (No. 11 overall) out of Rutgers. He started every game until last year, when he was limited to seven contests (all starts) due to concussion issues, as well as knee and hamstring problems.
