The Philadelphia Eagles made yet another stunning move on Thursday, releasing All-Pro guard Evan Mathis.

Mathis has been skipping voluntary workouts the past two years in hopes of landing a trade or a new contract. He was scheduled to make $11.5 million over the next two years. The moves saves the team $4.5 million.
Mathis immediately becomes the top available free agent and should draw plenty of interest on the open market — despite his age (33) — after grading out as the NFL’s top guard at Pro Football Focus in 2013 and coming in second last season.
The former 2005 third round pick (No. 79 overall) out of Alabama has been named to the Pro Bowl the past two years, earned All-Pro honors in 2013 and was named an All-Pro by Pro Football Focus three consecutive years from 2011-13. He was also ranked the No. 88 best player in NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2014 series.
