Atlanta Falcons linebacker Prince Shembo has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after kicking and ultimately killing his ex-girlfriend’s dog, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

According to the report, Denicia Williams — Shembo’s ex-girlfriend — recently took her dog, a Yorkie named Dior, to Shembo’s home. “At some point during her stay, Williams left Shembo and her dog unattended,” AJC.com’s Alexis Stevens reports. “When she returned, Dior was unresponsive, she told police.
“Williams took the dog to Duluth Animal Hospital, where Dior died shortly after her arrival. The following day, Shembo allegedly made comments to Williams about killing the dog, and she broke up with him, she told police.”
Though it wasn’t revealed why or how Shembo killed the dog, cause of death was blunt force trauma.
“The dog had a fractured rib, fractured liver, abdominal hemorrhage, thoracic hemorrhage, extensive bruising and hemorrhage in the muscles in her front leg and shoulders, head trauma, hemorrhage and edema in lungs, hemorrhage between the esophagus and trachea, and hemorrhage in the left eye with internal injuries.”
A 2014 fourth round pick (No. 139 overall) out of Notre Dame, Shembo appeared in all 16 games (three starts) and recorded 59 tackles as a rookie with the Falcons last season. The 6-foot, 254-pound linebacker is battling for a more prominent role in new coach Dan Quinn’s defense.
This arrest obviously won’t help his chances of earning the trust of the new coaching staff and could potentially lead to discipline from the team and/or NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
