Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Jesse Williams will miss the upcoming 2015 season and undergo kidney surgery after being diagnosed with Papillary Type 2 cancer.

“Although disappointing, I am a fighter and will handle this,” Williams said in a statement. “I am going to focus on my health and fighting this battle with a return to football as my ultimate goal.”

Nicknamed “Tha Monstar” with an incredible path to the NFL, Williams spent each of his first two seasons on injured reserve after suffering knee injuries in August 2013 and Aug. 2014.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound defensive tackle became the first Australian to win a Super Bowl ring after the Seahawks annihilated the Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII.

“Jesse is an extraordinarily tough individual who has overcome a great deal in his life and we will support him in any way possible,” Seahawks GM John Schneider said in a statement. “He is in our thoughts and prayers.”
