The St. Louis Rams have traded running back Zac Stacy to the New York Jets for a seventh round pick (No. 224 overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft, which the Rams used to take Baylor linebacker Bryce Hager.
Stacy was selected in the fifth round (No. 160 overall) out of Vanderbilt in 2013 and had a solid rookie campaign, but he suffered a serious knee injury during a very disappointing 2014 season and requested a trade from the Rams after the team selected Georgia star running back Todd Gurley with the No. 10 overall pick Thursday night.
In two seasons, Stay has appeared in 27 games (17 starts), rushing for 1,266 yards and eight touchdowns on 326 carries (3.9 YPC). He’s also caught 44 passes for 293 yards and a score as a receiver out of the backfield.
It’s a savvy move by St. Louis to get anything in return for its disgruntled fourth-string running back.
The Rams have really focused on overhauling their offensive line throughout the draft, selecting Wisconsin right tackle Rob Havenstein in the second round (No. 57 overall) and Louisville OT Jamon Brown in the third (No. 72 overall).
After rolling the dice on Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion with its other third-rounder (No. 89 overall), St. Louis selected Iowa OT in Andrew Donnal in the fourth round (No. 119 overall).
The Rams waited all the way until the sixth round (No. 201 overall) to take a receiver, Bud Sasser out of Missouri. And then, 14 picks later, the club added yet another lineman in Cody Wichmann out of Fresno State.
Their seventh round picks have been used on the aforementioned Bryce Hager and DE Martin Ifedi.
Just because a guy doesn’t hear his name called until the later rounds doesn’t eman he won’t have long-term success. In fact, some of them, like last year’s sixth round pick E.J. Gaines, who we interviewed before the draft, actually provided an immediate impact and had a strong season as a full-time starting cornerback.
We also interviewed Aaron Donald, the Rams’2014 first round pick who of course had a sensation season.
