The Houston Texans are reportedly trying to trade starting strong safety D.J. Swearinger, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Meanwhile, I’m told the #Texans are trying to trade safety DJ Swearinger. He’s started 22 games over his first 2 seasons.

Swearinger, 23, was selected in the second round (No. 57 overall) in the 2013 draft out of South Carolina. He’s appeared in every game with 22 starts in his first two seasons and registered a total of 144 tackles with one sack, three interceptions and four forced fumbles.
The 5-foot-10, 208-pound tenacious and versatile defender isn’t likely to generate much trade value after grading out as a bottom-10 safety in Pro Football Focus’ ratings last season.
He also only seems to make headlines for his dubious tactics, like skipping out on a $20,000 bill for a car customization last month. His dog also bit last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick Jadeveon Clowney last month. And Swearinger also gets into on-field trouble too often with senseless penalties.
Nevertheless, he’s still talented and could conceivably be an effective tone-setter for a defense if he’s surrounded by the right coaches and teammates who can help him learn from his mistakes.
If Houston parts ways with Swearinger, there’s a good chance the team will land one of the top safeties during the first two days of this week’s draft. Another option is acquiring a veteran free agent, like Stevie Brown, who visited the Texans last week.
